Brave Search Review

What is Brave Search?

Brave Search is a privacy-focused search engine from Brave, the company behind the privacy browser of the same name. Unlike many competitors, it is powered by its own independent web index built from scratch rather than relying on Google or Bing.

On top of search, Brave layers AI answer features: AI Answers returns a concise summarized response with source references for many queries, while the newer Ask Brave fuses traditional search with an AI chat mode that supports follow-up questions, deep research, and contextual enrichments such as videos, news, products, and local businesses.

These AI capabilities are built in-house using Brave's own models and algorithms. Privacy is central: chats are encrypted, conversations are not used for AI training, and chat data is deleted after a period of inactivity.

Use cases range from everyday web search and research to conversational question answering and shopping discovery, all without ad-based tracking. Pros include a genuinely independent index, a strong no-tracking privacy model, free access to AI answers and Ask Brave, and tight integration with the Brave browser.

Cons include that its index, while independent, can have less depth than Google on long-tail queries, and that some power-user search features sit behind a premium tier. Pricing is largely free for AI answers, with an optional paid Premium plan.
